Wedding innovation with business value: An interview with the director of HP Labs

Prith Banerjee discusses the new mission of corporate research labs and the challenge of managing innovation to create business impact.

HP Labs, the central research arm for Hewlett-Packard, forms a small but critical piece of the company’s R&D ecosystem. Prith Banerjee, director of HP Labs, leads a core group of 500 researchers, whose charge is to innovate 5, 10, and 15 years beyond the focus of the other 30,000 R&D engineers within HP. In this video interview, Banerjee discusses how he has tried to align long-range innovation projects with the current business plans and vision of the company. He also talks about the value of localizing research talent, the importance of measuring innovation, and the evolving role of corporate research labs. Lenny Mendonca, a director in McKinsey’s San Francisco office, spoke with Banerjee at HP’s headquarters, in Palo Alto, California.

I really liked the idea of having a portfolio of research projects and innovation with reference to emerging markets. This is really true that one cannot understand the problems and challenges of less developed countries while sitting in offices in Europe or the US. A local “feel” is a must at the stage of product development.

A very mature innovation management system. The key aspects of the system are the internal coordination mechanisms for transfering new technologies, selecting ideas, and determining project roadmaps. The video does not capture the HP’s links with external ecosystems, the rationale advanced in the open innovation concept.

I did not really hear that he is using incentives, but rather that management sets the direction or vision of the future and then his people move to support this direction, at times reluctantly. Incentives can at times be counterproductive to getting the intrinsically motivated people to move and the excessive use of extrinsic motivators can kill the intrinsic motivation within people.

Enjoyed the video. I think there is a lot emerging entrepreneurs can learn from HP to help them drive innovation and growth in their companies. One item I was particularly intrigued by is HP’s effort to try to bring innovation to the issue of only 5% of India’s population having a computer. One thing came to mind when hearing that statistic is for entrepreneurs to look in their respective industries and geographies to find anomolies like the India situation and see if one’s company can bring an innovation to deal with the particular statistic to drive some growth and innovation.
